From Cohome Inc.:

It's birding season and local adults with disabilities are stepping up to create homes for our feathered friends.

Residents of Cohome Inc., a nonprofit organization creating homes for adults with disabilities in Morristown, have started their own "micro-business" making wooden crafts.

Tom Alexander, the parent of a resident and a custom home builder, is helping out.

"The residents can really take ownership over the project," Tom says. "They get a sense of pride that they can be a part of something that will benefit the community and home that they live in."

These beautiful birdhouses are currently for sale at Just Jersey, the Morristown gift store selling products made in New Jersey.

"We are so excited to be working with Cohome and appreciate the opportunity to support their mission in a small way," says Tina Bologna, co-owner of Just Jersey.

"The birdhouses are beautiful and well-made. We love the sense of pride the residents have in their work and that they decide how the funds are used."

The first batch, priced at $80 apiece, have sold out. More designs, at different price points, are contemplated, according to a Cohome spokesperson.

In making these crafts, Cohome residents tap a variety of skills.

"I got to use special wood glue when making the birdhouses," says Hannah.

Residents recently visited the shop, a quick walk from their home on Miller Road.

"Seeing the birdhouses at Just Jersey was exciting," Hannah says. "And we made a sale!"

The residents decide for themselves how to spend their earnings. Proceeds are handled democratically at a monthly meeting, where residents propose ideas and vote. Jacob, a resident with a certificate in bookkeeping and a knack for numbers and organization, will keep track of funds.

"I’m glad I can use my skills as a bookkeeper to be helpful for this project," he says.
