In 2024, the amount of wood boxes, crates and cable drums exported from the Netherlands declined notably to 512K units, which is down by -42.6% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of 94%. The exports peaked at 1.1M units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2024, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum exports contracted to $69M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. In general, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $75M in 2023, and then fell in the following year.

Germany (135K units), the United States (80K units) and Belgium (65K units) were the main destinations of wood box and cable drum exports from the Netherlands, together comprising 55% of total exports. France, Denmark, Taiwan (Chinese), Japan, China and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +27.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($32M) remains the key foreign market for wood boxes, crates and cable drums exports from the Netherlands, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($7.7M), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.7% share.

From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States totaled +24.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+40.0% per year) and Germany (+14.1% per year).

In 2024, the wood box and cable drum price stood at $136 per unit (FOB, Netherlands), surging by 61% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 103%. The export price peaked in 2024 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2024, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($407 per unit), while the average price for exports to Denmark ($28 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
